NICU Awareness Month: Helping Our Tiniest Fighters

September is NICU Awareness Month, and Children’s Miracle Network at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital has set an ambitious goal of raising $25,000 to support the tiniest fighters in our community. The Children’s Hospital in Hershey is home to the region’s highest-level NICU, providing vital care to thousands of newborns each year.

Take Liam’s story as just one example of the difference donations can make. His mother, Kristy, had a smooth pregnancy until doctors discovered fluid around her baby’s lungs. At 36 weeks, Liam was delivered via C-section, requiring immediate intervention to save his life. During his nine-month NICU stay, he faced many challenges, from cooling therapy for his brain to chest tubes to a tracheostomy to help him breathe. Specialized equipment funded by Children’s Miracle Network donor contributions – like bedside cameras, advanced cribs, and feeding systems – played a critical role in his survival and comfort.

Donor support gives babies like Liam the gift of growing up. Whether it’s funding life-saving machines or providing a warm meal to a stressed parent, every dollar makes a difference. And with The Hershey Company matching donations up to $25,000, gifts go even further.
